 I honestly and unironically believe that Japan has popculture of much higher quality than the rest of the world.  The types of stories that are mainstream in Japan would have had hard time publishing in Europe or America,  and if they were published they would have been of niche interest. I'm not thinking Jump magazine family level of mainstream,  most of it is shit,  but there are true cerebral pearls published in popular magazines,  Jun Mochizuki and Asumiko Nakamura are authors that come to mind, but honestly,  reading manga I rarely feel that author considers readers to be idiots for wanting to read something that is not strict realism with no emotions.
