Finally got around to reading the What If…? book that has Moon Knight in it.

It’s good!

Age of MoonKnight over on Tumblr did a chapter-by-chapter liveblog, which I enjoyed. Check that out if you want a more beat-by-beat coverage of the plot (and lots of quotes). This is more of an overall post-game reflection.

Some short, spoiler-free reactions:

  • Based on the title, I expected “a canon-divergence AU where Marc meets Venom instead of Khonshu.” Instead, it starts in a universe that’s pretty close to 616, Khonshu and all. That gets crashed by an AU Marc who did get Venom’d…but it’s not a long-term divergence for him either, it basically happened that day. So, not the story I expected to see, but it’s good at being the story it wanted to tell
  • Jake and Steven get a very satisfying amount of page time. Haven’t counted, but I bet there’s a similar amount of chapters for all 4 POV characters (Local Marc, Import Steven, Import Jake, and Venom)
  • There are lots of fun deep-cut references to all kinds of random comics stuff. You can tell the author had a good time finding things to add in, and asking their MK-fan friends for suggestions
  • The author has good takes on Marlene! It’s one of their breakup eras, she helps out when the plot demands it and clearly still loves them, but she’s sticking to her boundaries and Marc is wistfully respectful about it
  • There’s an ongoing plot through all the What If…? books, which I mostly wasn’t interested in. Very authentic to the experience of “reading a Moon Knight tie-in with a Comics Event”

Longer, full-of-spoilers analysis and reaction follows.

Happy Saturday!

I'm going to be doing a little maintenance today. It will likely cause a tiny interruption of service (specifically for www.dreamwidth.org) on the order of 2-3 minutes while some settings propagate. If you're on a journal page, that should still work throughout!

If it doesn't work, the rollback plan is pretty quick, I'm just toggling a setting on how traffic gets to the site. I'll update this post if something goes wrong, but don't anticipate any interruption to be longer than 10 minutes even in a rollback situation.

Warning for some humor that could be read as mocking the mentally ill…though I don’t think they’re the real target here.

By now, the Justice League International era had done plenty of traditional superhero yarns like the arcs spotlighting the Crimson Fox, the Extremists, Despero, even General Glory. But it’d also tried lots of non-traditional subjects: moving, repo jobs, feline violence, membership drives, pranks.

So when Starro…the Justice League’s oldest enemy…came back at the end of JLE #25 but was all “Hey, I come in peace,” you really didn’t know whether to believe him or not.

I did, but only because I read the issues out of order. )

Wrapping up volume 2 of Seven Seas’ new print edition of PSOH! Sometimes with comparisons to volume 3 of the original Tokyopop translation.

I’m posting the individual reactions on Mastodon and Bluesky, then rounding them up in the blog. Previous roundups in my PSOH fandom tag. You can pick up the books with my affiliate links here.

I made myself so hungry looking up the desserts named in this one, and I don’t think any of them are sold in my area. Boo.

Reading
  • I started reading We Need Your Art: Stop Messing Around and Make Something by Amie McNee. I bought it awhile back bc I follow Amie on ig, but I finally picked it up as hopefully an alternative for The Artist's Way that I can relate to better.
  • I started reading Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. This is the current book for my work's DEI book club. It's something I've had on my tbr for years, so it's nice to have an excuse to read it finally! It's very interesting, though it is pretty long.
  • I read some more on Demon Fish by Juliet Eilperin. Still haven't made it that far, but I am enjoying it so far.
  • Ficwise, I'm still mostly reading JunDylan. Currently doing some rereading because I got stuck in a rut of fics that were ok but not satisfying :/
Watching
  • The roommate and I watched more of MuTeLuv. We made it through the third story, which was thankfully much less gross in the second half. Fourth story was good, though I could have done without the het romance at the end, it really just did not work for me. Fifth story was good as well. It was nice to see JanJingjing for the first time, plus Leng! We've got two stories left now.
  • The roommate and I watched more of Running Man Thailand. Second episode was also great. Loving Tay even more :D
  • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Cat for Cash. Oh, the family drama! I enjoyed that a lot actually. Already got some spoilers for the next episode that make me kind of sad though...
  • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Duang With You. The relationship is really progressing! Surprising since we're only halfway through, so I can't wait to see what drama there is to come lol
  • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Only Friends: Dream On. AouBoom are fucking killing it!! I am obsessed with their kiss in the car scene, jfc. The ArnoldTua storyline also has me very interested, especially with fucking Boston showing up and definitely having history with Tua.
  • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Yesterday. I am sooo curious about what happened with Lalit. Things seem to, somehow, be getting even more complicated on all fronts.
  • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of My Romance Scammer. Love seeing how much Tim and U are willing to do for their relationships. For U it's working so well! For Tim, well, preview shows it all falling apart and I am dreading and looking forward to it equally lol
Listening
  • Lots of LYKN. They did the first two stops of their North American tour this week, so there have been a million fancams to watch. Kinda sad about the roommate and I deciding not to do the NYC show (standing room only for the whole theater was just not doable for us), but it is making me even more determined to make it work for the Chicago show in August.
Writing
  • Nothing.
Learning
  • Nothing.
  • I have started doing some planning for what "courses" I want to study for the next quarter though. So far I'm keeping Thai, with some new resources added, and dropping Japanese for now, since Thai is more of an immediate desire to learn. Otherwise I'm thinking maybe song writing? Or embroidery, since I have a kit? Or drawing? Or something active, like dance or yoga? Or something about anthropology or environmentalism? Idk, I have a huge brainstorming list, so I really need to narrow it down and see what resources I can find.

X-Men United, originally solicited as X-Men Arsenal*, is the follow-up to Exceptional X-Men. Same creative team, same core cast, but an altered premise. It's the training book, but with more characters, and now they have a mental plane headquarters named Graymatter Lane.

*Go on, get the football jokes out of your system. It'll feel good.

Warning for some uncomfortable sexual symbolism. Keith Riffen, Ger-words Jones, bArt Sears.

Giffen’s Justice League plots are never boring, but this story feels extra unhinged, its elements strung together more by Freudian associations than his usual grounded, working-class perspective. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn the production process involved a six-pack of story dice and some of the more stimulating drugs.

yarning
Made and sent 2 catnip-silvervine hearts (to the same customer who has ordered about nine of them now). Missed yarn group due to cold, torrential rain, and DST. Made and sent 2 multicolored kickbunnies. Finished the turquoise kickbunny for kitten academy's current momcat (her kittens are 2 weeks old and adorable!), but haven't gone to the post office yet. Continued Easter carrots after messaging the customer to confirm the number and cost (so stressful!). Now they just need smiles and hanging loops.

healthcrap
I loathe springing forward. Still can't get up at a decent hour. Daytime vertigo is now coming randomly. In the night, it's mostly connected to lying in bed/rolling over/getting up to go to the bathroom. Fun times. I do feel a bit better overall. I got all my healthcare coverage renewal info uploaded and am impatiently awaiting a telephone appt. Tongue still has a hole in it, but it's shallower than it was and is slowly healing...if I can just keep from biting it. Had to start a new tube of benzocaine.

+ Check locally for anti-war protests. I'm finding Reddit and Instagram to be fairly good sources if you check often. (Last Saturday was a national protest, but I didn't know about it until just a couple of hours beforehand. Doh!)

Thanks for the kind comments on recent posts. I've been terrible at replies. I hope you're all doing well! <333

There was a video game for Maximum Carnage way back in the day, and I was a Production Assistant on the commercial for it. My job was to drive the truck full of camera equipment from Long Island to Manhattan, pick up my producer, get breakfast and bring it all to set… but I didn’t realize that I left the key to the lock on the truck at home until we got the breakfast. My producer sat on giant coffee urns and held bagels in his lap as I drove to set – but I was so frazzled that I drove the wrong way down the West Side Highway and was pulled over by a cop!!! -- Joe Kelly

Maximum Carnage! I have to say, it’s been a minute, and I was a Clone Saga do-or-die back around when it landed – but I remember a whole pile of villains infighting and yelling at each other and hating each other as much as (or more than) they hated the comics. Can’t beat that! -- Charles Soule

During the 90s, I was off reading Proper Comics like Hate, Eightball, and Love & Rockets, so Maximum Carnage passed me by a little bit – I hear Carnage is pretty Maximum in it, but that’s about all I know. -- Al Ewing

Okay, so my last few posts have featured images that not everyone could view. So, let's try ImgBB, and see if that works better.

That better? Or worse? Anyway, stuff happens in this issue that you may not want to see. And I'm not talking about the mutant nudity.
